Introduction
This was the first Megaman game from the Rockman World series, games that are clearly derivative from the Megaman entries on NES but they are exclusive to Game Boy. This was also the first Megaman game not developed by Capcom, and featuring developer Keiji Inafune only as a designer.
Plot (no spoilers)
Evil Dr. Wily came back from his defeat so he restored 8 robot masters to fight Megaman again. However, this time may be different, because he prepared a new enemy called Enker, also known as «Megaman Killer«.
Gameplay
The first portable Megaman game inherits everything from classic Megaman NES entries. Gameplay follows the trend about jumping, shooting to defeat enemies and progressing until the boss level appears. These bosses drop their weapons when defeated, and these weapons are actually the tools for defeating the remaining bosses.
However, the game is shorter than previous entries: only 4 robot master levels (Elec Man, Ice Man, Fire Man and Cut Man) and then a pair of additional Dr Wily’s levels. So, the game is way too short but difficulty is not easier than NES Megaman by any means.
In fact, Dr Wily’s levels feature 5 robot masters from Megaman 2 and we need to beat them in an ordered fashion to get the advantage against remaining robots. So, this may be a big challenge for a first attempt.
A visible weakness is that game mechanics are as basic as Megaman 1, so there are no charged shots, Rush or E Tanks. So it’s quite possible that the developer’s goal back then was just to bring some sort of portable Megaman 1 port.
Graphics
Megaman, enemies, robot masters, items, etc. have the very same style as the NES entries. So, there’s not much to talk about here, but maybe only one exception is worth mentioning. And this is a cool detail: on a Dr Wily’s level, there is a blinking screen with the message «Dr. Wily transport system».
And here’s an interesting detail for the trivia: this game actually has color if played on a GBA, but the VC versions for 3DS are completely black-n-white like the original GB version.
Music
The OST from the robot mater levels are actually derivative from the NES tracks. And sound, in general, is based on NES versions too. Obviously I’m not writing that GB has the same sound definition as NES, I’m describing that music and sounds are basically a copy-paste but adapted to the GB hardware.
However, there is an excellent original track composed specifically for this game: Dr Wily’s level one has one of my favorite sountracks from all Megaman universe.
Conclussion
This game brought Megaman to the portable world for the very first time, and it became a solid influential entry for all the remaining Rockman World series. The game inherits almost everything from NES Megaman, specially from the first entry, but it’s still very fun to play it and it can be challenging too.
